SUMMARY:Teaching with Wikipedia: a practical 'how to' workshop
DESCRIPTION:This event will demo best practice from working with over ten course programmes at the University of Edinburgh over the last 4 years along with exemplars from other UK universities: https://open.ed.ac.uk/wikimedia-in-education/ \nParticipants are welcome to stay as long as they wish with the main workshops 12-1pm and 2-3pm. \nWorkshop links \n\n24th June: https://bit.ly/TeachWiki24Jun\n1st July: https://bit.ly/TeachWiki1Jul\n15th July: https://bit.ly/TeachWiki15Jul\n\nYou will need to create a Wikipedia account in advance in order to take part. \nThis workshop will consist of 3 practical exercises: \n\nSetting up a dashboard page to manage a Wikipedia assignment.\nEditing practical (citations\, images\, editing in sandbox & live space).\nCreating a worklist of articles to create & edit.\n\nDemystifying the process behind such assignments\, attendees will have the opportunity to find out more about how assignments can be conducted in their own field. Too often Wikipedia is framed as something to be avoided\, to be “consumed at your peril”. At the University of Edinburgh we flip this on its head\, and see Wikipedia as learning technology\, reimagining it away from something passively consumed to something our staff and students can positively contribute to\, to improve global understanding on the most public of digital platforms as active engaged digital citizens\, and gain a lot from as a teaching & learning experience as a result. \nIn a recent survey 97% of instructors have said they would teach with Wikipedia again while Wiki Education assignments have also been shown to improve student writing and the learning & teaching within the curriculum.  Importantly\, students are motivated to communicate their scholarship in a real-world application of teaching & learning for an audience of not just one\, their tutor\, but a worldwide audience of millions. Sharing knowledge\, building understanding. DESCRIPTION:Embed and further your understanding and knowledge of copyright through discussion and play with ‘Copyright the Card Game’. \nThis workshop reviews aspects of UK copyright and uses practical familiar scenarios and cards to apply our knowledge and identify what we know\, how we practice\, and what we can do with the materials and resources we have. \n‘Copyright the Card Game’ engages positive aspects we can apply copyright needs through four ‘suits’. \nThe four ‘suits’ in the game are: \n\nCopyright works – what is the material that someone wants to use? Is it protected by copyright and how is it defined in the law?\nUsages\, or what the law calls the ‘restricted acts’ that are the exclusive right of the copyright holder. How does what you want to do with a work map onto the usages as defined in the law?\nLicenses – how do licences work? DESCRIPTION:Join us to add of all the incredible women missing from Wikipedia!\nThe University’s Information Services team run a monthly Wikipedia ‘edit-a-thon’ focused primarily on improving the systematic bias on Wikipedi by adding more articles about notable women missing from the free and open online encyclopedia. \nThese are social and supportive workshops where you can meet like-minded colleagues\, learn a new digital skill and feel free to edit on any subject. \n\n1pm-1:30pm– Crash course in Wikipedia training.\n1:30pm-4:30pm – Research and EDIT!\n4:30pm-5pm – Publish.\n5pm – Close.\n\nThen you can check how long it takes for your new page to appear in Google’s top ten results! \nWikipedia is the 5th most visited website in the world and the first point of information for many so surfacing knowledge there can make a huge impact. Yet\, as of 19th August 2019\, only about 17.94% of the English Wikipedia’s biographies are about women. Not impressed? Physicist Jess Wade certainly wasn’t. She has written 460+ articles about women in science in the last year and has been named in Nature’s 10 people who mattered in 2018 as a diversity champion. \nNo prior knowledge is required. You’ll learn how to edit Wikipedia and participate in an open knowledge community. Participants will be supported to develop articles of their choice related to notable women missing from Wikipedia. \nWe’ll be there 1pm to 5pm so join us when you can and stay as long as you want to/need to (some people get VERY into writing their articles when they get started). \nOpen to all. DESCRIPTION:The practical applications in Higher Education of the most recent social or technical development (MOOCs\, social media\, digitisation and online collaboration etc.) or regulatory changes (RCUK & HEFCE OA policies\, new copyright exceptions) has led to a new level of complexity vis-à-vis Open Access and Copyright compliance. \nThis training course is well-suited to those who require a basic understanding of copyright law\, licensing and HE applications\, and open educational resources. For those who already have some knowledge of copyright law and licensing\, this course can serve as a refresher. SUMMARY:Witchy Wikipedia editathon for Halloween
DESCRIPTION:Come join us as we set a place for the dead; through helping to create new biography articles and improving existing articles as part of a day of celebration. \nHave you ever wondered why the information in Wikipedia is extensive for some topics and scarce for others? On Halloween\, Thursday 31st October 2019\, the University’s Information Services team are running an edit-a-thon to mark Samhuinn: the Gaelic Festival for the Dead and further document the accused witches of Scotland as part of our ongoing project work on the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database. \nProgramme \n\n1:00pm – 1:05pm: Housekeeping and Welcome.\n1:05pm – 2pm: Crash course in Wikipedia training.\n2pm – 4:30pm: Research and editing.\n4:30pm – 5pm: PUBLISH! Transferring drafted text to Wikipedia’s live space.\n\nWe will provide training on how to edit and participate in an open knowledge community. Participants will be supported to develop articles covering areas which could stand to be improved in order to improve Wikipedia’s representation of notable lives; be they connected to the university\, to Edinburgh\, to Scotland or further afield. \nBetween the worlds of the living and the dead \nSamhuinn is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the “darker half” of the year. Traditionally\, it is celebrated from the very beginning of one Celtic day to its end\, or in the modern calendar\, from sunset on 31 October to sunset on 1 November. Samhuinn was seen as a liminal time\, when the boundary between this world and the Otherworld could more easily be crossed. This meant the Aos Sí\, the ‘spirits’ or ‘fairies’\, could more easily come into our world. Offerings of food and drink were left outside for them. The souls of the dead were also thought to revisit their homes seeking hospitality. \nNew editors very welcome. Full Wikipedia training given.
