DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the lives & contributions of all the incredible women missing from Wikipedia! \nThis event at the University of Edinburgh’s Main Library kicks of at 1pm so join us then if you can or drop in any time between 1pm and 5pm and stay as long or as little as you like. \nIt’s a chance to learn about & celebrate the role notable women have played through researching\, writing & illustrating Wikipedia articles about their lives and their contributions. \nYou’ll be given nibbles and supported to add images\, improve articles & create new articles (50 words+) missing from Wikipedia\, the go-to source of information for people all around the world. \nWikipedia is the 5th most visited website in the world and the first point of information for many so surfacing knowledge there can make a huge impact. Yet\, as of 23rd September 2019\, only about 18.04% of the English Wikipedia’s biographies are about women. Not impressed? Physicist Jess Wade certainly wasn’t. She has written 750+ articles about women in science in the last year and has been named in Nature’s 10 people who mattered in 2018 as a diversity champion. \n \n\n\nJoin us this for our Women in Red workshop as we help make Wikipedia better!\n\n\nNo prior knowledge is required. You’ll learn how to edit Wikipedia and participate in an open knowledge community in a social and supportive setting. Participants will be helped to develop articles of their choice but suggestions for articles to work on will be provided. \nNB: The room has desktop PCs but you can bring a laptop along to the event if you prefer.\n \nProgramme\n\n\n1pm: Welcome and crash course in Wikipedia editing for those new to editing.\n1:30pm – 4:30pm:EDIT! DESCRIPTION:The practical applications in Higher Education of the most recent social or technical development (MOOCs\, social media\, digitisation and online collaboration etc.) or regulatory changes (RCUK & HEFCE OA policies\, new copyright exceptions) has led to a new level of complexity vis-à-vis Open Access and Copyright compliance. \nThis training course is well-suited to those who require a basic understanding of copyright law\, licensing and HE applications\, and open educational resources. For those who already have some knowledge of copyright law and licensing\, this course can serve as a refresher. DESCRIPTION:Embed and further your understanding and knowledge of copyright through discussion and play with ‘Copyright the Card Game’. \nInstead of focusing on aspects of the law and thinking about what copyright might stop people from doing\, ‘Copyright the Card Game’ encourages on four positive aspects to copyright. \nIt is based on working in teams to tackle a number of common scenarios.This afternoon session will involve working in collaboration as together you work through the cards and questions to win points and develop your copyright confidence. \nThe four ‘suits’ in the game are: \n\nCopyright works – what is the material that someone wants to use? Is it protected by copyright and how is it defined in the law?\nUsages\, or what the law calls the ‘restricted acts’ that are the exclusive right of the copyright holder. How does what you want to do with a work map onto the usages as defined in the law?\nLicenses – how do licences work? DESCRIPTION:The University’s Information Services team run monthly Wikipedia edit-a-thon focusing on improving the quality of articles about notable women. But these are social and supportive workshops where you can meet like-minded colleagues and edit on any subject. \n\n12:30pm-12.35pm – Housekeeping and Welcome.\n12:35pm-1:30pm– Crash course in Wikipedia training.\n1:30pm-4:30pm – Research and EDIT!\n4:30pm-5pm – Publish.\n5pm – Close.\n\nThen you can check how long it takes for your new page to appear in Google’s top ten results! \n  \nNo prior knowledge is required. You’ll learn how to edit Wikipedia and participate in an open knowledge community. Participants will be supported to develop articles of their choice related to notable women missing from Wikipedia. \nWe’ll be there 12:30pm to 5pm so join us when you can and stay as long as you want to/need to (some people get VERY into writing their articles when they get started). \nOpen to all. DESCRIPTION:The practical applications in Higher Education of the most recent social or technical development (MOOCs\, social media\, digitisation and online collaboration etc.) or regulatory changes (RCUK & HEFCE OA policies\, new copyright exceptions) has led to a new level of complexity vis-à-vis Open Access and Copyright compliance. \nThis training course is well-suited to those who require a basic understanding of copyright law\, licensing and HE applications\, and open educational resources. For those who already have some knowledge of copyright law and licensing\, this course can serve as a refresher. SUMMARY:Wikipedia Women in Red - a monthly workshop to add more biographies of women to Wikipedia
DESCRIPTION:The University’s Information Services team run monthly Wikipedia edit-a-thon focusing on improving the quality of articles about notable women. But these are social and supportive workshops where you can meet like-minded colleagues and edit on any subject. \n\n12:30pm-12.35pm – Housekeeping and Welcome.\n12:35pm-1:30pm– Crash course in Wikipedia training.\n1:30pm-4:30pm – Research and EDIT!\n4:30pm-5pm – Publish.\n5pm – Close.\n\nThen you can check how long it takes for your new page to appear in Google’s top ten results! \n  \nNo prior knowledge is required. You’ll learn how to edit Wikipedia and participate in an open knowledge community. Participants will be supported to develop articles of their choice related to notable women missing from Wikipedia. \nWe’ll be there 12:30pm to 5pm so join us when you can and stay as long as you want to/need to (some people get VERY into writing their articles when they get started). \nOpen to all. Everyone is welcome. \nAs part of the university’s commitment to Athena SWAN\, the University’s Information Services team run this session as a monthly Wikipedia meetup/edit-a-thon to address the systemic bias on Wikipedia where only 17.74% of biographies are about notable women. \nMore details can be found on the Women in Red page. \nThese are informal drop-in sessions so knowledge of Wikipedia editing is beneficial. However\, Wikipedia editing can be easy to pick up as this 5 minute walkthrough of the new Visual Editor interface demonstrates.
