DESCRIPTION:Be guided through the steps to create your very own interactive digital story game on the web with the Twine tool. \n  \nTwine is an open-source tool for telling interactive\, nonlinear stories. \nYou don’t need to write any code to create an adventure story with \, but you can improve your stories with variables\, conditional logic\, images\, gifs\, sound effects\, and video shorts\, for a multimedia experience. \nTwine publishes directly to HTML\, so you can post your work nearly anywhere. Anything you create with it is completely free to use any way you like\, including for commercial purposes. \n  \nDiscover how you can use openly licensed images and materials from the University of Edinburgh museum\, library\, archives\, and Media Hopper’s Open Media Bank for your own creative endeavours. \nDuring the workshop we will look at the variety of public domain and openly licensed materials on the web that are available for creative re-use\, and discuss the ethical responsibilities we as creators have towards those materials. DESCRIPTION:The University’s Information Services team run monthly Wikipedia edit-a-thon focusing on improving the quality of articles about notable women. But these are social and supportive workshops where you can meet like-minded colleagues and edit on any subject. \n\n12:30pm-12.35pm – Housekeeping and Welcome.\n12:35pm-1:30pm– Crash course in Wikipedia training.\n1:30pm-4:30pm – Research and EDIT!\n4:30pm-5pm – Publish.\n5pm – Close.\n\nThen you can check how long it takes for your new page to appear in Google’s top ten results! \n  \nNo prior knowledge is required. You’ll learn how to edit Wikipedia and participate in an open knowledge community. Participants will be supported to develop articles of their choice related to notable women missing from Wikipedia. \nWe’ll be there 12:30pm to 5pm so join us when you can and stay as long as you want to/need to (some people get VERY into writing their articles when they get started). \nOpen to all. Everyone is welcome. \nAs part of the university’s commitment to Athena SWAN\, the University’s Information Services team run this session as a monthly Wikipedia meetup/edit-a-thon to address the systemic bias on Wikipedia where only 17.74% of biographies are about notable women. \nMore details can be found on the Women in Red page. \nThese are informal drop-in sessions so knowledge of Wikipedia editing is beneficial. DESCRIPTION:The Diversithon is a Wikipedia editing event in a social and supportive setting to celebrate diversity in science and Scottish history for the Festival of Creative Learning and LGBT+ History Month 2019. \nWikipedia is the 5th most visited website in the world and is an important first stop when looking up science and history topics. But it lacks diversity both in its editorship and its articles. \n“To increase the diversity of voices\, genders\, and cultures among its contributors and editors\, the Wikimedia Foundation has made it a strategic goal to recruit and foster more women\, people of colour\, and other underrepresented individuals—including LGBT+ populations… the Wikimedia Foundation recognizes that the majority of its Wikipedia contributors and editors are disproportionately male\, under 22 years old\, and (most likely white and straight) from “the Global North”. They also admit that Wikipedia’s coverage is skewed toward the interests\, expertise\, and language skills of the people who created it…”   Wexelbaum\, Herzog\, & Rasberry\, “Queering Wikipedia” (2015). \nThis event will help you build the skills to contribute to and improve Wikipedia – a useful skill for anyone to have – and focuses on creating new articles to include notable Black\, Asian and Minority Ethnic professionals; LGBT+ professionals; and continuing our work to address the systemic gender gap on Wikipedia where only 17.83% of biographies are about notable women. \nNo prior knowledge is required and you’ll be supported to develop articles of your choice. For those who already have some knowledge of copyright law and licensing\, this course can serve as a refresher.
