DESCRIPTION:Copyright and licensing awareness is essential to enable the provision of teaching (in person\, online\, or hybrid)\, research\, and information services in compliance with the law\, to enable the creation of sustainable learning resources\, and to encourage open educational practices. This Quick Start 30 minute information session will provide an introduction to the basics of copyright and licensing in UK education. \nLearning Outcomes: \nThis 30-minute course provides a brief introduction to UK copyright and exceptions including: \n\nComponents and duration of UK copyright law\nPublic domain\nUK copyright exceptions related to teaching\nLicences and how they allow specific re-use of copyright protected works\n\nThis session is open to staff and postgraduate students\, and will be run by Stephanie (Charlie) Farley. Charlie is our Open Educational Resources (OER) Advisor for Educational Design and Engagement. SUMMARY:Women in Red – a monthly workshop to add more biographies of women to Wikipedia
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person in the Library (Digital Scholarship Centre on 6th floor) for our Wikipedia Women in Red ‘edit-a-thon’. This event focuses primarily on improving the systematic bias on Wikipedia by adding more articles about notable women missing from the free and open online encyclopedia where only 19.55% of biographies are about women. \nThese are social and supportive workshops where you can meet like-minded colleagues\, learn a new digital skill and feel free to edit on any subject. The first hour is devoted to learning how to edit\, thereafter you are free to apply your new skills by researching and writing new content which you can publish by afternoon’s end. \n\n1:00pm–2:15 pm Intro\, say hello\, discuss work and crash course in Wikipedia\n2:15pm-2:30pm – Choosing the article to work on and short break.\n2:30pm-4:30pm – Research and EDIT!\n4:30pm-5pm – Publish\, event recap and close.\n\nThen you can check how long it takes for your new page to appear in Google’s top ten results! \nNo prior knowledge is required. You?ll learn how to edit Wikipedia and participate in an open knowledge community. Participants will be supported to develop articles of their choice related to notable women missing from Wikipedia. \nWe’ll be there to answer qs and provide support and chat 1pm to 5pm so join us when you can and stay as long as you want to/need to (some people get VERY into writing their articles when they get started). \nOpen to all. And possibly contribute to the third edition of the We Have Great Stuff Colouring Book? \nIn this workshop we will be creating beautiful digital illustrations ready for colouring inspired by the University of Edinburgh’s women in science\, technology\, engineering\, and math (STEM). \nWe will be using the free browser-based solution Sketchpad\, and you will be guided through the steps from choosing an image to the finished product. SUMMARY:Open for Good: 10 years of open course development at Edinburgh University
DESCRIPTION:This public webinar will tell the story of how the University of Edinburgh has developed an open course creation workflow that has enabled us to shared 100 free short open course and over 1000 OERs over the last 10 years. \nIn 2013 the University of Edinburgh launched our first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in partnership with Coursera\, as part of our strategy to become a world leader in digital education. Ten years later\, we’ve built a diverse portfolio of 100 free short online courses\, covering everything from Astrobiology to Andy Warhol. We’ve developed partnerships with international education providers\, universities and cultural organisations\, and our courses have benefitted 4 million learners worldwide. \nTo ensure our courses are open\, sustainable\, and accessible to all\, openness is embedded in every step of the course creation workflow\, supported by a dedicated Online Course Production Service\, working closely with our OER Service. Underpinned by the core values of open education\, accessibility and quality\, the Online Course Production Service works in collaboration with academic partners to ensure all our open courses align with University strategy and the UN Sustainable Development Agenda. Over 1\,200 Creative Commons licensed media resources from these courses have been shared through our Open Media Bank where they can be accessed by learners in perpetuity\, and downloaded for remixing and repurposing by educators around the world. We also share our workflows and open practice through blog posts\, open pedagogy and learning design resources\, open policies\, and have created two open courses to share our expertise – How to Create an Online Course\, and How to Create Video for Online Courses. \nJoin our team of senior leaders\, learning technologists\, media producers\, instructional designers and open educators to hear the story of how we developed this unique open course development workflow and to discover what we learned along the way. \nSpeakers will include Stuart Nicol\, Head of Educational Design and Engagement; Fiona Buckland\, Online Course Production Service; Geoff Fortescue\, Media Production; Lorna M. Take some time out and have fun learning how to make your own gifs from open licensed and public domain\, museum\, library\, and archival materials. \nThe Workshop \nThis is a beginner level Gif making workshop that doesn’t assume any prior experience using graphic editing software tools. \nIn this introductory workshop you will be guided through the steps to create your very own gif using images and materials from museum\, library\, and archival materials. \nOver the course of two hours we will look at the variety of public domain and openly licensed materials on the web that are available for creative re-use\, and discuss the ethical responsibilities we as creators have towards those materials. \nWhat you need \nIt’s recommended that you participate from a desktop computer or laptop. SUMMARY:Women in Red – a monthly workshop to add more biographies of women to Wikipedia
DESCRIPTION:Join us in our monthly Wikipedia Women in Red ‘edit-a-thon’. This event focuses primarily on improving the systematic bias on Wikipedia by adding more articles about notable women missing from the free and open online encyclopedia where only 19% of biographies are about women. \nThese are social and supportive workshops where you can meet like-minded colleagues\, learn a new digital skill and feel free to edit on any subject. The first hour is devoted to learning how to edit\, thereafter you are free to apply your new skills by researching and writing new content which you can publish by afternoon’s end. \n\n1:00pm–2:15 pm Intro\, say hello\, discuss work and crash course in Wikipedia\n2:15pm-2:30pm – Choosing the article to work on and short break.\n2:30pm-4:30pm – Research and EDIT!\n4:30pm-5pm – Publish\, event recap and close.\n\nThen you can check how long it takes for your new page to appear in Google’s top ten results! \nNo prior knowledge is required. You’ll learn how to edit Wikipedia and participate in an open knowledge community. Participants will be supported to develop articles of their choice related to notable women missing from Wikipedia. \nWe’ll be there to answer questions and provide support and chat from 1pm to 5pm\, so join us when you can and stay as long as you want to/need to (some people get VERY into writing their articles when they get started). \nOpen to all. Everyone is welcome. \nAs part of the university’s commitment to Athena SWAN\, the University’s Information Services team run this session as a monthly Wikipedia meetup/edit-a-thon to address the systemic bias on Wikipedia where only 19% of biographies are about notable women. \nMore details can be found on the Women in Red page. \nThese are informal drop-in sessions so knowledge of Wikipedia editing is beneficial. However\, Wikipedia editing can be easy to pick up as this 5 minute walkthrough of the new Visual Editor interface demonstrates.
