DESCRIPTION:The practical applications in Higher Education of the most recent social or technical development (MOOCs\, social media\, digitisation and online collaboration etc.) or regulatory changes (RCUK & HEFCE OA policies\, new copyright exceptions) has led to a new level of complexity vis-à-vis Open Access and Copyright compliance. \nThis Copyright and Licensing training course is well-suited to those who require a basic understanding of copyright law\, licensing\, and open educational resources. For those who already have some knowledge of copyright law and licensing\, this course can serve as a refresher. Opportunities for questions and discussions will be ample. \nCopyright and licensing training is an important way to build confidence\, awareness and staff skills\, enabling them to provide information services in compliance with the law and open educational resources. \n  \nEugen Stoica is a Scholarly Communications Officer for the Library and provides support for Intellectual Property Rights\, bibliometrics\, repository administration and e-theses. \n  \nStephanie (Charlie) Farley is our Open Educational Resources (OER) Advisor for Educational Design and Engagement. DESCRIPTION:The UoE Open Knowledge Network is a new initiative that aims to bring together colleagues from across the institution who are working in the area of open knowledge\, open data\, open access\, open education\, open science\, open collections & archives\, etc.\, in order to support cross-fertilisation and promote the institution’s activities in these areas. \nThe first Open Knowledge Network event is taking place on the 31st of January and will be relevant to all those with an interest in open knowledge or who are curious to learn more. The event will feature an opening talk from Gill Hamilton\, Digital Access Manager at the National Library of Scotland\, lightning talks highlighting open knowledge activities and initiatives around the university\, followed by break out sessions to discuss relevant issues and future activities. \nThis event is open to all staff and students and colleagues are welcome to drop in for some or all of the event. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday May 19th we will be guests at the Medical Education Forum held regularly over at Little France. \nThis session will include an introduction to Open Education Resources from OER Advisor\, Stephanie (Charlie) Farley. Followed by an update from Simon Riley about his work on OpenMed (http://openmed.co.uk/)\, a learning framework for students and staff to curate medicine and health care OERs and other open access resources. \nOpen Education Resources (OERs) are online resources that are available for others to use to support learning. The University of Edinburgh has recently adopted an OER policy\, which outlines the institutional position on OERs and provides guidelines for practice in learning and teaching. \nThe room has been booked until 3pm so that anyone wishing to can stay on  after the initial session for an informal workshop.
