Open Up! Mainstreaming Strategic Support for Open Education at the Unviersity of Edinburgh
By Lorna M. Campbell and Stuart Nicol
This praxis in open presentation reflects on how the University of Edinburgh has embedded strategic support for open educational resources and open knowledge across the institution, exploring how our commitment to open practice is helping to transform the curriculum and contribute to our shared knowledge commons. Integrating openness in the curriculum is core to our teaching and learning ethos, encouraging innovation, and bringing significant benefits for both staff and students. We’ll present a range of case studies of open education practice from across the university including creating sustainable open media resources for free short online courses, Wikimedia in the Curriculum initiatives, open textbook production, and co-creation of interdisciplinary STEM engagement resources for schools. Our experience shows that mainstreaming strategic support for open practice is key to ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Open for All: Developing an Open Course Creation Workflow at the University of Edinburgh
By Stuart Nicol, Fiona Buckland, Andrés Ordorica, Marcello Crolla, Lizzy Garner-Foy, Geoff Fortescue, Lorna Campbell, Lauren Johnston-Smith
In 2013, as part of our commitment to widening access to high quality online learning, the University of Edinburgh launched our first MOOC. Ten years later, we’ve built a diverse portfolio of 100 free short online courses and over 1000 OERs that have benefitted 4 million learners worldwide.
To ensure our courses are open, sustainable, and accessible to all, the Online Course Production Service works with the OER Service to embedded openness in every step of the course creation workflow. Over 1,200 open media resources from these courses have been shared through our Open Media Bank for reuse by educators around the world. We share our open pedagogy, learning designs and policies, and have created two open courses to share our expertise – How to Create an Online Course, and How to Create Video for Online Courses.
Our video presentation will tell the story of how the University of Edinburgh developed this unique open course creation workflow and share what we learned along the way.
