Scientific Analysis of Heritage Collections

Four Egyptian ushbatis, funeral figures

This open licensed video explains the process using XRF Spectrometry to analyse and determine the elemental composition of Egyptian ushabtis in order to date them as accurately as possible and determine whether they are the oldest artefacts in the University of Edinburgh’s collection.

The project was undertaken by Cameron Perumal, an astrophysics undergraduate and Employ.Ed intern in 2019 under the supervision and support of the Library and University Collections team.
