Echoes of Egypt: A Time Traveller’s Quest and Introduction to Archaeology TES OER

Take a trip into the past!

This resource is a set of three lesson plans that introduce aspects of ancient Egypt from a child’s perspective, concluding with a brief introduction to the field of archaeology. The lessons are designed for learners aged 5 to 8. This resource includes slides, lesson plans, and additional notes to supplement the lesson slides, as well as handouts for hands-on learning. The hands-on approach ensures that learners are actively engaged and learning effectively. 

 

Background: 

This lesson can be incorporated into the school’s curriculum for a general knowledge class of Level 1 learners. The resource was created as a part of the University of Edinburgh’s Geoscience Outreach and Engagement course. This resource has been created for use as an Open Educational Resource (OER) by the OER Service, at the Information Services Group at the University of Edinburgh. As an OER, teachers are welcome to make any changes to their resources according to their needs. 

 

Objectives and Success Criteria: 

  • I can understand how ancient Egyptians made and wore clothing.  
  • I can understand the differences in materials and styles used in the past.   
  • I can compare how people lived in the past and present.   
  • I can engage and express my ideas through creative design.   
  • I can work collaboratively to solve a puzzle.  
  • I understand the different writing systems that were used in ancient Egypt.  
  • I can compare school life now to what children experienced in the past.  
  • I can understand the role of an archaeologist and what archaeology involves.  
  • I can record and analyse artefacts found in a dig.  
  • I can practice basic archaeological methods of excavation.  
  • I can reflect on what we can learn about the past through archaeology. 

 

Experiences and Outcomes: 

EXA 1-05a: Inspired by a range of stimuli, I can express and communicate my ideas, thoughts and feelings through activities within art and design.   

HWB 1-20a: I can describe some of the kinds of work that people do and I am finding out about the wider world of work.  

LIT 1-07a: I can show my understanding of what I listen to or watch by responding to and asking different kinds of questions.   

LIT 1-09a: When listening and talking with others for different purposes, I can exchange information, experiences, explanations, ideas and opinions, and clarify points by asking questions or by asking others to say more.  

LIT 1-28a/LIT 1-29a: I can convey information, describe events or processes, share my opinions or persuade my reader in different ways.   

SOC 1-04a: I can compare aspects of people’s daily lives in the past with my own by using historical evidence or the experience of recreating an historical setting.
