Exploring Nature’s Comeback: Rewilding at Port Seton Links TES OER

Let’s get (re)wild!
The main component of this resource is an activity book designed to inform young children about rewilding in a fun and engaging way. This resource was originally developed as two workshops (one indoors and one outdoors) for P2 pupils at Cockenzie Primary School to fit in with their topic at the time: Living and non-living things.
While the activity book is the main component, it can easily form the basis of workshops for primary school children, brownies/cubs, holiday clubs etc since this was how the resource started. As well as the activity book this resource includes the PowerPoint slides, and the lesson plan used for the indoor workshop at Cockenzie Primary School. Both the activity book and the lesson plan can easily be adapted for a different location by replacing the information and image of Port Seton Links with another rewilding site.
Background:
This resource was created as part of the GeoScience Outreach Course which is a 4th year undergraduate course in the School of GeoSciences aiming to provide students with the opportunity to develop their own science communication and engagement project. This resource has been created for use as an Open Educational Resource (OER) by the OER Service, at the Information Services Group at the University of Edinburgh. As an OER, teachers are welcome to make any changes to their resources according to their needs.
Objectives and Success Criteria:
- Draws two conclusions about how living things adapt to the climate in any chosen area.
- Describes at least three different ways in which land is used in the local area, for example shops, houses, farming.
- Draws at least two conclusions as to the effects the landscape has had on how people can use it, for example desert, rainforest.
- Explores and sorts objects as living, non-living or once living.
- Describes characteristics of livings things and how they depend on each other, for example, animals which depend on plants for food.
- Discusses and expresses opinions about science topics in real-life contexts, including those featured in the media.
Experiences and Outcomes:
SOC 1-08a: I can consider ways of looking after my school or community and can encourage others to care for their environment.
SOC 1-13a: Having explored the landscape of my local area, I can describe the various ways in which land has been used.
SOC 1-13b: By exploring a natural environment different from my own, I can discover how the physical features influence the variety of living things.
SCN 1-01a: I can distinguish between living and non-living things. I can sort living things into groups and explain my decisions.
SCN 1-20a: I have contributed to discussions of current scientific news items to help develop my awareness of science.
