Art and the Playfair Library

Student interviews, blog posts, and videos discussing the Art and the Playfair Library project and student artists’ books have been (most but not all) shared on an open licence so that the student’s activity and output can reach as wide an audience as possible.

Art and the Playfair Library is a project led by Elizabeth Lawrence, Rare books Librarian at the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Research Collections (CRC), and Jane Hyslop, Lecturer in Art and Illustration, in collaboration with third year School of Art students from Edinburgh College of Art (ECA).

The students were asked to make artists’ books inspired by, or drawing references from, the volumes that once graced the shelves of the Playfair Library in Old College, which for 140 years was the home of the University’s Library collections, and the heart of study and learning in Edinburgh.

View the full project including interviews with the students on their process and select images of their artists’ books on the Art and the Playfair Library webpage.
