Creating Edinburgh – Student created interdisciplinary OERs ’24/25

As the ’24/25 academic year comes to a close we review the excellent range of OER created by students across the University. We have four new fabulous resources to share created by undergraduate students as part of the Edinburgh Futures Institute course Creating Edinburgh: The Interdisciplinary City.
Led by Dr David Overend, Creating Edinburgh takes an innovative approach to interdisciplinary education by shifting the site of learning from the seminar room to the city outside. The course brings together groups of undergraduate students from diverse subject areas, encouraging them to see themselves as part of a connected global city and to engage with the complex challenges of urban life in the twenty-first century.
This year’s students have created diverse and innovative OERs that encourage you to explore the city of Edinburgh and discover different historical and contemporary events, themes and industries that influence the physical and social structures of the city.
Green Edinburgh seeks to explore a diverse range of environmental initiatives and locations within Edinburgh, inspiring individuals to reflect on and enhance their understanding of global environmental issues.
Educating Edinburgh explores the deep connection between the University of Edinburgh and the city of Edinburgh. Through field trips and the walking route, examine how the university’s presence impacts the city’s economy and communities.
Edges of Edinburgh examines how the city of Edinburgh is defined by its decided, physical, natural, or presumed borders, and different attitudes about where it begins or ends.
EdinBAR invites you to explore the roles that historical bars have served in Edinburgh and the influences that have redefined their purposes over time. Along your route, you will investigate and observe the economic, environmental, and socio-cultural impacts that the bars across Old Town have on the people, history, and structure of the city. From infamous bars such as The Last Drop, where people had their last drink before the gallows, to local favorites such as The Waverley, you will have countless opportunities to inspect and reflect on the variety of pubs and bars in Edinburgh and what they mean for the past, present, and future of the city.
