Copyright the Card Game

Embed and further your understanding and knowledge of copyright through discussion and play with ‘Copyright the Card Game’.
This workshop reviews aspects of UK copyright and uses practical familiar scenarios and cards to apply our knowledge and identify what we know, how we practice, and what we can do with the materials and resources we have.
‘Copyright the Card Game’ engages positive aspects we can apply copyright needs through four ‘suits’.
The four ‘suits’ in the game are:
- Copyright works – what is the material that someone wants to use? Is it protected by copyright and how is it defined in the law?
- Usages, or what the law calls the ‘restricted acts’ that are the exclusive right of the copyright holder. How does what you want to do with a work map onto the usages as defined in the law?
- Licenses – how do licences work? What licences are available and how might they be used to enable you to go beyond what the law might allow
- Exceptions – what copyright exceptions exist in the UK and how can you make better use of them
The session is based on working in teams to tackle a number of common scenarios. This will involve working in collaboration as together you work through the cards and questions to develop your copyright knowledge and confidence.
Scenarios will include use of materials in recorded lectures, open vs. closed teaching spaces, publishing, open educational resources (OER), and student works.
Use this session to build on and embed your existing knowledge, as a refresher, or inspiration!
