Extinction Expedition: Myths and Fossils TES OER
Where did all the dinosaurs go?
The “Extinction Expedition” project invites learners to explore the history, mystery, and legacy of the dinosaurs in a hands-on and imaginative way. Through three workshops, pupils become palaeontologists, using real evidence, historical hypotheses, and scientific thinking to piece together what may have caused the extinction of dinosaurs.
The project also challenges movie-based myths, encourages discussion and collaboration, and helps pupils recognise that the story of dinosaurs didn’t end with extinction. Traces of them live on through modern birds and other surviving species.
Background:
This resource has been created for use as an Open Educational Resource (OER) by the OER Service, at the Information Services Group at the University of Edinburgh. As an OER, teachers are welcome to make any changes to their resources according to their needs.
Objectives and Success Criteria:
- Understand the environment in which dinosaurs lived.
- Explore competing theories about the extinction of dinosaurs.
- Debunk popular myths about dinosaurs using scientific evidence.
- Investigate evolutionary connections between dinosaurs and modern-day species.
- Encourage critical thinking, teamwork, and creativity through interactive activities.
Experiences and Outcomes:
SCN 3-05b: I can apply my understanding of how fossils are formed to explore how living has changed over long periods.
SOC 3-01a: I can use my knowledge of current social, political or environmental issues to express an informed personal opinion.
SCN 4-01a: I have contributed to investigations into the key processes of evolution and understand how natural selection and adaptation may lead to the evolution of species.
SOC 4-01a: I can present supported conclusions about the impact of historical events on people today.
Have a look at this resource if you’d like to turn students into palaeontologists, exploring histories, solving mysteries and creating legacies of dinosaurs!
