In this open seminar, Prof Frank Miedema discusses the limitations in the current academic system of incentives, rewards, communication, and career progression, and how these compromise the openness and integrity of scholarly outputs.
He then describes the role of Open Science in addressing these systemic flaws, including “what is Open Science”, “why is it essential”, and “what is happening to realise this potential of Open Science”? Prof Miedema is Emeritus Professor and a leader in the Open Science movement.
Miedema was, until 2023, Vice Rector for Research at Utrecht University and chair of the Utrecht University Open Science Program. He was in 2013 one of the initiators of Science in Transition (www.scienceintransition.nl/english) who believe that the academic incentive and reward system is in need of fundamental reform. Next to Science for Science, the impact on society must be valued more and societal stakeholders should be involved more integrally in the production of knowledge.
