Who comes first: Bottom or Bacteria?

This is a recording of an Meeting on the topic ‘Who Comes First – Bottom or Bacteria? Understanding STI DoxyPEP and Antimicrobial Stewardship’.

Date: Tuesday, 16th October 2025

This session was led by Dr Chase Ledin, who presented his ongoing research exploring healthcare perspectives on the normalisation of STI doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP) in sexual medicine.

Drawing on semi-structured interviews (n = 15) with doctors, nurses, and health promotion specialists, the session examined how healthcare professionals understand the problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) within sexual medicine, how antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) is constructed within and beyond clinical settings, and how social responsibility for AMS is shared among healthcare professionals, patients, and sexual communities.

Presenter: Dr Chase Ledin – University of Edinburgh
Researcher in sexual health and medicine. Chase’s work examines how new biomedical interventions – such as DoxyPEP – reshape understandings of responsibility, risk, and care in public health and clinical practice.
