GitHub – Open Textbooks, Notebooks, & Code
Did you know that GitHub is a great platform for hosting and sharing open educational resources? We have an excellent variety of OER being created and shared over on GitHub by our university staff and students, and it’s easy to see why the platform is becoming a preferred host for a range of educational materials.
Mostly known by programmers and coders, GitHub is a platform and cloud-based service for software development and version control, allowing developers to store and manage their code. It also provides access control, bug tracking, software feature requests, task management, continuous integration, and wikis for every project.
Then there’s GitBook, where creators can sync with an existing GitHub branch or import from Confluence, Notion, GitHub, Dropbox Paper, and Google Docs. Its real-time block editor lets creators rearrange everything on the go with support for code blocks, images, tables and more.
Especially useful for our Open Education purposes is that licensing your work on GitHub is made easier with the Choose an open source license tool.
