Research Informed OERs for Primary and Secondary Level Education

Open Education Week banner

Open Education Week is an international celebration of all things open, taking place on 2 – 6 March, and the theme this year is exploring the town square for open education.

As a contribution to this celebration, we’ve collated a collection of open educational resources that have been co-created by staff and students from the research outputs of the university’s academic researcher community.

Creating OERs from current research is a great way to share research and innovation, encouraging public engagement, diversifying teaching materials and contributing to our shared knowledge commons. It’s also in line with the University’s Learning and Teaching Strategy 2030 and its core purposes of engaging and empowering learners, supporting inspiring teaching and supervision, and developing a future ready curriculum.

Research Led

As a research-intensive University, we will continue to ensure our teaching benefits from our research by actively engaging our students in the process of knowledge creation and exploration, and affording them greater opportunities to work with our researchers. Through exposure to current research findings, methodologies, and debates within their respective fields of study we help our students to develop a deeper understanding of their subject matter, contributing to the advancement of their disciplines. By engaging our students in research-led learning we develop their critical enquiry skills, inspire creativity in problem solving, and prepare our students for potential careers in research, academia or industry.

Research Led OERs

Our first collection for Open Education Week 26 highlights excellent OERs for Primary and Secondary level learners created using research undertaken by University of Edinburgh staff and postgraduate student researchers. Many of these resources include information about the researchers involved in their co-creation to help engage young learners with the real world of research.

Research Informed OERs

Additionally we have a selection of more general research informed OERs created by our students for educators to use in classrooms. Again we include information about the  students and their studies to help engage young learners with the real world of higher education and research.
